Intel’s smallest processor

The Intel Atom family of low - power processors is designed specifically for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and a new class of simple and affordable Internet-centric computers arriving later this year. The company has also announced the Centrino Atom Processor technology for MID platforms, consisting of multiple chips that enable the best Internet experience in a pocketable device. The Intel atom processor is based on an entirely new micro-architecture designed specifically for small devices and low power, while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatability that the consumers are accustomed to when using a standard PC and the Internet. The design also includes support for multiple threads for better perfomance and increased system responsiveness.

Microscope on a chip

An electron microscope small enough to fit onto your fingertip will be four times more powerful than the best microscopes available today, claims its designers. Scanning electron microscopes(SEMs) focus a beam of electrons instead of light, and can capture stunning images of tiny structures with a 3D appearance. The very best can distinguish structures as small as 0.05 nanometre - roughly the distance between a hydrogen nucleus and its electron. Physicist Derek Eastham of UK firm NFAB thinks he can achieve a resolution around four times better - as low as 0.01 nanometre.

Web in your Pocket

Soon just about any consumer device would serve up rich, multimedia data at any time and any place, without annoying hiccups or pauses, and without wires. Samsung’s sleek VLUU i70 camera offers a glimpse into this future. The camera moves the data via a superfast connection built around high-speed downlink packet access(HSDPA), which is comparable to digital subscriber line connectivity but without any wire. That’s about five times faster than the fastest mobile networks available in the US today. The connection paired with the camera’s LCD screen and MP3 music functions, turn it into a sophisticated multimedia player, suited for downloading and reading e-books, listening to music or watching videos.
